@Jo - apparently, way back in olden times, labourers and servants used to work just for 12 months. Every October they'd go to a fair carrying some item signifying their trade - and anybody who had no particular speciality would carry a mop. There they'd mix with employers, and once 'taken' they'd lose the mop and get ribbons to use at the fairground stalls and games. Two weeks later there's the smaller 'runaway mop', where people unhappy with the new employers would switch to someone better.

@Ed - yep - some guy before us had to take his shoes off. Hmm, I'm skeptical about that one :-)

I did a reverse bungee in Singapore. Did you have to remove everything from your pockets, and also any jewellery too?!
Someone told me afterwards that one of the bungee ropes had apparently broken about a year before. :)

/shudders

I don't know what makes my run blood colder - the thought of going on the reverse bungee or the knowledge that 10 years ago, I would have been at the front of the queue (as you can no doubt tell, those two statements cover three issues)

Remind me why it's called the mop fair?
