Ah yes entanglement is the word i was after :) I think I've got caught up in the idea. I'm not purporting any aliens there might be out there are going to do any of this ;)

Entanglement is very cool though. Whilst we see the pairing of particles as random... it could be predictable or even changeable with further study... This is speculation around science I know, but if they could find a few particles in a world leader's brain which they can affect they could cause a nuclear war or something :)

So they'd need to predict pairings conveniently nearby or know how to change the pairings, and then have control over a large number of pairings (some world leaders would require less particles than others) to have some influence over just one individual. Pretty unlikely from our current understanding of quantum entanglement then :) It's comforting to know isn't it Mr Cox? :)

I think you're talking about 'entanglement', in which two particles are linked, no matter how far apart they are. This is only in terms of properties, though - I don't think you can move one and have the other start wandering about of its own accord :-) Unfortunately entanglement, while mysterious, isn't quite as exciting as you'd think, as it can't be used to transfer any information. The particles do indeed balance each other out, so if one is 'spin down' the other will be 'spin up', even if they're on opposite sides of the universe. The thing is, it's still random as you don't know which is which before you measure it. So you still can't break the transmitting-information-faster-than-light barrier imposed by relativity.

I suspect the reason we haven't met any aliens isn't that they've failed to master faster-than-light travel, but that they have figured out virtual reality :-)

What if they had mastered quantum mechanics? That would allow them to use one atom which could control another right? But hey, 'matter information transportation' isn't a big leap once quantum technology is mastered... right ben? :)

I'm not sure - I think the number of people who would object to such a thing is higher now than it ever has been. Whether that's enough to make a difference I don't know, but I'd still argue that more complex technology and methods of thought inevitably lead to moral advances. The issue should be moot, though - there should be plenty of resource-rich uninhabited worlds out there.

"Benevolence correlates with advance"? Not so sure about that. You could argue that we are more advanced than the earlier Europeans who 'discovered' Africa, America and Australia, but would we still behave much differently? If we discovered a planet which was rich in resources and inhabited by a primitive civilisation I can't see us leaving it alone. We might not do the whole missionary thing but somehow we would end up taking over, allowing the natives a reservation, if we didn't accidentally wipe them out. Would it feel any better to them that it was all done benevolently?

Even the colonial atrocities in South America, North America and Africa were carried out with best intentions, for the greater good, in the name of god, etc.

Its too late anyway. The aliens are already here and have taken over comment Is Free.
