I wondered about cron jobs or rss feeds.

Have u got caching enabled? Perhaps a bit of query caching might help?

Good suggestions. I installed mtop to monitor MySQL queries, but whatever it is that's causing the problem is intermittent and sucks up memory so suddenly that I've never caught it in the act. The really annoying thing is that when the site goes down the server stays up for a while, but doesn't let us ssh in.

Flick on the settings to highlight long running queries, perhaps?

Perhaps you can monitor what queries are being executed as well and then trace that back?
