How to find Cardinal’s letter to the Cabinet?
Does anybody know whether there's a public archive which might have a copy of Cardinal Cormac Murphy-O'Connor's letter to the Cabinet? It apparently says:
We believe it would be unreasonable, unnecessary and unjust discrimination against Catholics for the Government to insist that if they wish to continue to work with local authorities, Catholic adoption agencies must act against the teaching of the Church and their own consciences by being obliged in law to provide such a service
but I'd be interested to see the whole thing...

It’ll be a few years before the letter finds itself in the Public Record Office at Kew. If I were you write to the Cabinet Office
Openness Team
Cabinet Office
Room 4.45
Admiralty Arch

Email: Openness.Team@cabinet-office.x.gsi.gov.uk
and ask to see a copy of the letter, possibly citing the Freedom of Information Act – they may be able to help.

Closing the catholic adoption agencies isn’t actually going to prevent catholics from adopting via other agencies now is it, i mean, at the end of the day these people *want* to adopt, its not like they’re conscripts in the army. So its unfair and innaccurate of this letter to make it sound as if all this potential is being lost. By closing the faith based agencies unwilling to accept the law, the law is upheld, and various other agencies can provide similar services, with the support of the relevant preachers of faith going directly to the prospective parents – after all religion is one of these things which is inherently based on followers asking for advice and support from those in positions of responsibility. This service, I am sure, the church does not wish to close. Should start a petition of the government to not just disregard this letter, but take action against these illegally acting adoption services who are discriminating against potential parents.
