Ben - worth a look, thanks. Ed - It lets you search images / desktop / groups etc. from the same box, as well as providing a form spell-checker, phishing warnings and autofill for forms. It's surprising how often it comes in handy :-) Tom - ouch!

Because he said he hadn't updated the toolbar in months I disabled almost everything else on his system before figuring out what was causing the problem.
