I was actually quite nervous as I clicked ‘play’. I’m a huge Superman fan, as you’re probably aware, and this was the first real chance to get any impression of the new film. I really, really don’t want it to suck. I’ve been cautiously optimistic so far. Bryan Singer as director was a great first step, the retention of the John Williams score an excellent sign, and the teaser trailer seemed to strike a decent tone. But can Brandon Routh and Kate Bosworth pull off the main roles? Superman’s difficult to identify with, especially to modern audiences – will the script portray the essential humanity of the character?
Happily, I wasn’t disappointed. Unless all the best lines have been put into the trailer, the script seems to have something going for it – the dialogue is sharp, and the final joke in particular is rather nicely done. The story looks intriguing, and Kate Bosworth actually suits Lois Lane surprisingly well. Kevin Spacey as Lex Luthor completely steals the trailer, and I’m hoping this will be toned down slightly in the film – it’s got to be Superman’s show, after all 🙂 Brandon Routh doesn’t actually get to speak much, so the jury’s still out on him. He does look the part, however!
I want it to be funny, but not silly. I want it to be epic, dramatic, and to be on the edge of my seat during the action sequences, despite the hero’s invulnerability. I want Superman to remind people why it’s harder to be good in an imperfect world than it is to exact revenge.
I’ll try to avoid the trailer from now on so I don’t memorise the scenes. I’m most excited about the film – roll on June 30th!
