This won’t come as a big surprise, but the funeral wasn’t cheerful. A fair few people attended, seemingly from all sorts of different groups and societies. His widow said a few words and a top hat, wand and white gloves rested on top of the coffin. It was extremely religious and there wasn’t the personalisation I was expecting. Each to their own, of course. I spoke to a few people, including an old friend from the Junior section, then drifted away. I’m glad I was there, and I’m grateful to Mat’s widow for saying I could go to the ‘close friends and family’ only service.
